As an artist and teacher, George held a strong advocacy for bringing people together through Art. He was a prolific painter and sculptor, influenced by his enthusiasm for Nature, Space, Storytelling, People, and Community. George worked in a wide array of media: oil, print, watercolor, gouache, ink, drawing, assemblage and sculpture. He drew great inspiration by his passion for the Pacific Northwest, and his travels to the Ural Mountains of Russia, both of which were reflected in his work.

George's Big Dreams for his Art Career led to Big Adventures. In 1990, he met Yuri Melentyev, the Minister of Culture for the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, as part of the Seattle Goodwill Games. After viewing Woodall’s artistic oeuvre, Melentyev invited Woodall to hold a solo exhibition at the Union of Artists Gallery in Moscow! George accepted this accolade, and his work received international exposure in the Russian capital in 1993, making Woodall’s art a significant component in this ambitious cross-cultural exchange.

In 1994 he co-organized and participated in the Perm International Snow & Ice Sculpture Competition, which was held for seven consecutive winters, one of which included Seattle artist Gerard Tsutakawa. Subsequently, George was invited to organize and direct the American/Russian Youth Art Exchange, from 1995 to 1998, which was held to great acclaim with the international and artistic experience changing the young participants’ lives forever. He was honored with a second solo international exhibition at the Perm State Art Gallery in 2004, the largest regional art museum in Russia. In total, Woodall made an astounding 22 trips to Russia over the next two decades, an accomplishment of which he was rightfully very proud.

George leaves behind a magnificent body of work which is held in great esteem. The Woodall Studio|Gallery is now proud to offer these works for sale. The intention is to share George’s work with the public, and continue to expose his legacy of exploration, optimism, and global connection, ultimately to inspire generations to come.

George Gilbert Woodall (1949 - 2020) was born in Hood River, Oregon, and grew up in Lake Stevens, Washington, followed by a few years in Anchorage, Alaska, in the early ‘60s, before the family returned to Lake Stevens where he graduated from high school. George enjoyed spending time at his family’s River Cabin on the Pilchuck River as a young artist. He graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Printmaking and Art Education in 1972, studying under such artistic luminaries as Jacob Lawrence and George Tsutakawa. After completing his degree, George made Seattle his home where he spent the rest of his life, living and working from his studio in downtown Seattle, directly across the street from the Seattle Art Museum.
